What Changed & What To Do

A recent policy change means applicants 18–20 who meet standard requirements may apply for the Texas LTC. Follow the steps below — start the online class, complete your shooting proficiency, then submit your DPS application.

How To Get Your License

  1. Complete the Online LTC Class at your own pace.
  2. Complete your Shooting Proficiency (indoor range, beginner friendly).
  3. Apply with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).
  4. Schedule fingerprinting with Identogo (service code provided during DPS application).

Eligibility Requirements

  • At Least 18 Years Old
  • No Felony Convictions
  • No Disqualifying Mental Health Adjudications
  • No Chemical Dependency
  • Pass A Background Check

You must still meet all standard Texas LTC requirements set by DPS.

Do I Need My Own Gun?
For most adults, yes — bring your handgun and ammo. If you don’t have one yet, rentals are available at the range. For Kids Safety sessions, gun and ammo are provided.
How Long Does It Take?
The online class is self-paced. Shooting proficiency typically takes about 1 hour. DPS processing timelines vary — submit your application promptly after training.
